No, I'm aware of the extra footage but didn't know there was a re-edit to include everything. I'm not super into the idea honestly because I think Lynch is a pretty deliberate film maker. But in this case it was Lynch having to compromise on the movie length due to studio pressure. Sure, the edit is fan made, but the footage is Lynch shot and some of it is relevant for The Return. For me the fan cut is the definitive version and I like to think Lynch would at least partially agree.

Has he ever spoken about it? I'd be surprised if he agreed to be honest. I realise the theatrical cut is a compromise, but all films are, to a greater or lesser degree. I would love to see a directors cut, for sure, but I don't think I could ever call a fan edit a definitive version of anything.

It’s the first one. I’ve been looking into it again since your previous message and there does seem to be consensus that it shouldn’t be the version on a first watch. I watched the original many times and the edit only once, but I really enjoyed it. Perhaps you’re right that Lynch wouldn’t though.

I think I watched the longer cut.

I always saw the film as an odd (unnecessary?) extension to the TV series and the extended version includes more supporting material. A mini-series, I suppose.

I think it very much deepens the tragedy at the heart of the series, which had by then veered heavily into looney tunes territory after Lynch’s departure. It also heavily retcons the lack of culpability that the show granted the killer. And Sheryl Lee’s performance is so so great.

He explicitly released the scenes separately, called The Missing Pieces. Those are all the deleted scenes, but just pasted together without editing them into the movie. That’s what the fan edits do. So you’re right that he might not have wanted a directors cut, but he did want those scenes watched.

Yeah I’ll definitely watch the Missing Pieces, and I might watch one of the edits, but I think it’s safe to say that, had Lynch been able to incorporate all of that footage in his version, the result would still have been very different given how crucial his editing and use of sound design are.
