I'm 62 and I've never lived in a country that doesn't work for the rich. I remember rooting for McGovern over Nixon and I think I might have been 8 or 10. I knew these motherfuckers were bad. Had no political information at all. I remember praying to whatever that Reagan would lose. I was 18
We believed social progress was permanent despite all historical precedent, and failed to keep up our guard when a smiling actor became president. We couldn't imagine the level of greed we see now. Star Wars replaced Star Trek and special effects became more important than the story.
So many things worked together to distract us, while the national consensus on what was right & good that we thought we'd reached was so much more fragile and illusory than we'd thought. Our opponents were making plans in the background all along.
I'm 72..We thought Nixon was the biggest crook in History, that the Vietnam War was the greatest tragedy of a lifetime & that the Watergate travesty was the worst, most impossible thing a shithole President could have done to destroy the trust of WeThePeople. Still, life was good...easy. Now this..
Last Republican president that got a little respect was Nixon.
He started the EPA & OSHA, then ended the war in Vietnam. All of those cost corporations and the wealthy. Which is why I believe they let him be removed, just to prove a point "DON'T FUCK WITH OUR PROFITS"
I think that's the main reason there are so many of us gray-haired folks protesting every day. Because we remember and want the best for our kids and grandkids...
Talking about 2 different things. But please feel free to lust after everybody else's money. You seem to be good at it. I guess you were a Bandit in a former life.
I'm a 60's gal also! Rode bikes, drank from hoses and didn't come home until the street lights came in. Now your kids don't want to go outside, our bridges and schools are failing us. 🤔 Was it better? No, but it did get shit done!
I'm 66 so Jeff & I are similar age. It was a fun time to be a hippie kid. My oldest sister was 18 in 1969. I was 10. Her record collection was a large part of the sound track of my life... plus all her friends who'd give me records or guitars.

I’m 70 years old. In 1973, my college tuition at the University of Texas was $4 a semester hour. In 1972, I remember paying 15 cents per gallon to fill up my ‘63 Plymouth Valiant.
From what I can tell, UT Austin has gone to a flat rate per major tuition scheme. I enrolled as a Nursing major in 1973band paid $60 for tuition only. Per their current table, anyone enrolled in their College of Nursing now would pay around $6000 a semester for tuition only.
Parks were free, university education was affordable, we beat Hitler, Bugs Bunny dressed in drag, we forced a lying, criminal President to resign. Walter Cronkite and Huntley/Brinkley delivered actual news.
Post boomers never knew what life in America was like before Reagan. Corporate CEOs didn't make multi-million dollar salaries, people had pensions and health insurance. You could afford a home and you could afford to retire comfortably. I'm 65, btw.
I am slightly older than Jeff. In Australia we had a basic living wage, My first home was 3 times my gross salary which was the norm. People were kind and neighbors looked out for one another. We never locked our doors. Everyone paid their share of taxes to get the infrastructure we use now.
My parents talk about that bygone era all the time. Kinda wished I had been around to witness it. Really hate I'm here witnessing this chaos and mayhem.
People also needed only 1 job to pay for rent/mortgage, groceries, utilities, etc. They could send their kids to college, debt-free. Many owned 2 cars and their own homes. Most people had that 1 job that gave them h/c, dental and vision ins. and pensions and were able to retire and live comfortably.
I'm 80 and I remember it well. Life was so much easier then and you could get ahead by just working hard. Now you're lucky to not be years in debt. The thing I miss the most is the hope and joy...where did it go?
I was born in the fifties. I’m a boomer. My dad ran a shoe store downtown. As a ten year old I could make a quarter sweeping the sidewalk out front. Took about 15 minutes. We don’t do that anymore. No one cares. Now we’re deporting the people who still take pride in doing the dirty work.
