If you want to know how this works, please have a look at the receipt after you pump gas in your car. We already have this (in ON pumps atleast) Basically you see the all inclusive price but in the receipt you'll see the break down.

I always say no. A few times I've been asked why, and I say I'm not interested in having my purchases tracked and correlated and data mined. One time the clerk was like "Ooh, okay. That's smart!"

I generally say no too, but realized with despair that shops can also track your debit card. At least when I declined to log in to my GAP account for an in-store purchase, the cashier said brightly "Oh no worries, you'll get the points anyways, because the account is linked to your debit card!"

A feel a more quid pro quo approach is appropriate. Every time a cashier asks for my contact details I offer an exchange: I will give them mine, but first they have to give me their birthday, phone number, address, etc. That is usually the end of the matter...

CASL is a great piece of legislation. I remember the handwringing when it first came in, but like all consumer protection it didn't hurt companies at all, but made it much easier to manage a digital life without being inundated with bullshit.
