I've always assumed the danger was when the solvent wasn't able to evaporate, which happened when the wash flowed into tight spaces like part seams, but the tests here are very smart and convincing (particularly the speed of the reaction and the crack in the middle of the part)

that's true also, but stress plays a more major factor. weakened plastic has a much less chance of cracking if you don't put any stress on them
