It's been so long, I honestly don't remember what it looked like. I spent *years* trying to get it running on DOSBOX with my CD to no avail. IIRC it's playable in a browser somewhere now...?

i played a ton of TIE fighter (floppy version) as a kid, i don't remember what kind of shading it had anymore, from youtube it it looks like Gouraud without textures, still like this style though im not sure if that's not just 100% nostalgia

it's a quite distinctive style, maybe it's just the combination of low-res 3d rendering and big pixels (or, the restriction in shades for 256 colors), it somehow looks softer than when one'd render the same on modern GPUs and resolutions

yeah it looks oddly flat and rounded? i do think the low resolution exaggerates that because the exact geometry is a little ambiguous!

the rounded thing may be that the Gouraud output is put through some non-linear ramp? that's just guessing though, i would imagine it's something cheaper than actual normal mapping

If you register the floppy version with XWVM and launch that one, you will get the totally flat-shaded models that come with that version.
The problem is that the floppy version doesn't have sound effects, voiced briefings, bonus missions, etc. It's a compromise.
