i think a few different formats of sprite could be very harmonious with this rendering technique.
first, you could have traditional flat sprites with baked depth. they'd composite well.

one thought for future applications is you could hand draw color and the depth channel for them- i think it'd be a good fit for authored sprites.
My map making work for OpJuno was all about visuals & idea "background will be stitched 1944 aerial photos" that *everything else* got buried.
Are you looking for ways to simplify sprite making so they're easier to manipulate /integrate? Or are there other reasons for generating rather than drawing a sprite (other than lack of ppl power and time/resources? :)
the idea that generating assets is a way to save time or labor is a popular misconception. it's just a different medium.
there are variants within this. some shapes (like a sphere) repeat a view for all four axes. others will have a unique view per axis.
