We had that under a bathroom, in effect, though not by design. The “design” was a somewhat larger-diameter cast-iron elbow sitting on half a brick angled up toward the tub drain.
I think it was supposed to just free-fall into the elbow and thence into the sewer stack. But it splashed enough to erode the dirt around the half brick and threw everything out of whack.
Ours did the same! I had to call the plumber to snake the drain and he came upstairs to tell me that he couldn't figure out where it went, but it wasn't the line to the street and was most likely just going to the yard. Said old houses sometimes do that. 1200 bucks to fix 😬
That fits with my suspicion that the crappy house flippers who had it before us weren't responsible. I could wish that they'd caught it but it took us about four years and an engineer guest who likes projects to notice.
Our landlord once mentioned to us that they needed to work on upgrading the pipes here and that one thing would be to connect us to the city pipes. Which then raised the question of “okay so where are the pipes going now??”
There’s already a tree root growing through the pipes out by the property line so many fun projects and surprises await whoever buys this house (cos we can’t afford to!)
