It's a Nazi controlled government until the politicians, whose salaries we pay, get those Nazis out of our government. Those politicians need to do something or they will be replaced. A promise, not a threat.
So Abraham Lincoln did not understand the framers when he spoke of "a govt for the people, by the people". The framers wanted a representative democracy.
Lincoln was a politician. He skillfully managed to win support for the Civil War, a war of choice, keeping abolitionists, and slave owners under one tent. I'm sure he understood the Constitution, and government "by the people" was close to, but not democracy.
These are variables. The US was less of a democracy in 1790 than it was in 1950. Only the House was elected directly. The Senate and the President were elected by state legislatures and Electors, making them less directly connected to their constituents.
I would agree that we have been an evolving democratic republic up thru the voting rights act in the 1960's. Since 2017, we have been downgraded to a "flawed democracy". If things continue, I expect we'll be downgraded further.
World nations have largely become plutocracies since ‘mass media’ went digital and widespread, via the internet, since the wealthy own almost all media outlets around the globe. Ultimately, this is a ‘rich vs. poor’ issue. Guess the rich never read Machiavelli. The people will prevail. #RESIST ✊

In a representative democracy, citizens elect officials to make laws and policies on their behalf. The U.S. operates under this system at all levels of government—local, state, and federal. Key features include:
Elections: Citizens vote for representatives (e.g., members of Congress, state legislators, mayors, etc.).
Republican Structure: The U.S. is also a constitutional republic, meaning it has a constitution that limits government power and protects individual rights.

They feared democracy. The House was their only concession.

While elements of direct democracy exist (like ballot initiatives in some states), the core system is representative.
