The district’s superintendent said he’s removing the Bible because the state “standard for library content prohibits books that have one instance” of sexually explicit content. That’s not true.

HB900 says that to determine if a book is sexually explicit, a reader “must consider the full context in which the description, depiction, or portrayal of sexual conduct appears.”

But that idea—that books should be judged in their entirety, and “shocking” passages should be considered in context—causes much weeping and gnashing of teeth among the book banners behind HB900. They’re lining up behind a bill, SB88, that would jettison that (sensible) concept.

How do they square that position with their professed Christianity, given that parts of the Bible are more sexually explicit than many of the books they consider “porn”?

IDK. It could be that some have read the Bible exactly like they’ve “read” The Bluest Eye—only a few parts, and only the ones they’ve been pointed to by other people with political agendas. I guess others are just good with cognitive dissonance.

Ah, yes, the people who see them as porn, and share the porn widely. Whether WE think it is porn or not, THEY disseminate it, while thinking it is porn. Isn't that against most social media rules?

That’s sadly just the latest of stupid laws the Texas legislature has passed when it comes to our kids. The origin story of the stupidest one dates back to the late 1950s. (Spoiler alert ISDs had the best lobby.)
