It's a good rule of thumb that things are usually not binary. There are degrees and shades of grey to everything.

... Except that if you're dealing with someone who DOES act as if things are pure binary, a sense of nuance will not help you understand their motivations.

i have a theory that this kind of journalism is the result of too few non-college educated journalists. it didn’t used to be that way. journalism was mostly a blue collar job. all you needed was the ability write plainly for a broad audience.
