Doom is where we get the term "deathmatch". It's where we first saw competitive shooters take off. It's where the concepts of modding and speed running began. It's where esports took off. Most insane of all to me, Doom in 2025 still absolutely fucks. It's still a fucking banger of a game. HOW.

When Doom came out, for five years, the term for FPS games was "Doom Clone". When Windows was releasing Windows 95, one of the selling points was that it could still run Doom because there were more installed copies of Doom than there were copies of Windows 95.

I remember as a child playing Doom on my dad's lap, it was the first video game I ever played, a game my dad's workplace was brought to it's knees by because everyone was playing Doom instead of working. Nearly every modern video game engine runs on code that was written by Carmack and Romero.

The reasons shotguns in video games don't function like they do in real life is because Doom had them as close range weapons. Everything goes back to this one-year project by a team of less than ten over 30 years ago, a game that doesn't just "hold up", it's still the goddamn yardstick for shooters.

feel swathes of its DNA in seemingly entirely unrelated titles. *And* the game still holds up and can be picked up and played by just about anyone. It's got an obscenely dedicated fanbase that has produced a nigh infinite amount of content. DOOM truly is eternal.
