You can't be influenced by Brian Wilson. You can only take from him. What he created was so new and strange and distinctive that it belongs to him, full stop.

Brian Wilson's obsession with Be My Baby - he played it many times a day, had copies all over the house - is sort of scary, sort of comforting - even geniuses get humbled - & it's the Rosetta Stone. He did that. He turned everything up to 11 & broadcast to outer space, but he did it.
'The Beach Boys: Making Pet Sounds' is the best music documentary ever made. The meticulous telling of the story is worthy of the exacting nature of it's main subject. The segment on 'God Only Knows' does a good job as any in showing pure genius.
I've kind of understood this as a challenge since you first posted, without consciously thinking about it. And tonight this popped up in shuffle and I thought: Aha! Maybe this is the one exception.
