You can also crudely separate out different coloured particles this way, if they have different weights.
Here's a comparison of the finest reddest, and heaviest, much darker components of my solution.
I can tip these into shallow dishes or leave them in their cups, & wait for water to evaporate

The heavier parts are in cups; the solids will settle to the bottom faster, then I can pour off some of the water.
I used ~½ the mud, drying the rest.
Still lotsa lighter stuff suspended int water, but you can see a layer of sediment forming at the bottom of the cups.
Might smoosh up a small piece of mud in water & put in a measuring cylinder to settle, so we can see layers better!
Let's see what precipitates!
So it is one way to determine the percentage of each in a soil.
Put the big containers outside so the water can evaporate quicker in the heat. Covered with nets to stop any crud falling in. Little wasp still found its way in tho, lol.
I'm such a nerd, like 'oooo bug!' Forgot the net is supposed to keep stuff out!
Have poured some liquid of the two heaviest cups too, since I want to separate the heavier from the lighter parts.
