Looking for a replacement word for "homesteading" which is overly colonial. Something that encompasses food gardening, foraging, traditional skills & arts, living close to the land, etc. without silo-ing it as romanticized "cottagecore" or gardening-specific "permaculture" and so on. Ideas?

It's tempting to think of the US as a feudal system these days but I don't think I'm actually a serf yet.
