I was amazed the first time I put an image in Apple Words and it just rearranged the text around the image perfectly. That was in 2002. Come on MS, seriously.
Microsoft is an acquisitions company. Got tech they don't have or want? Either buy you out or make it impossible for you to trade. They never innovated and actually stifled progress.
First mover advantage extended by buying out competitors, forcing your inferior product onto consumers, and rely on cheapskate corporations to endlessly buy garbage and depreciate it.
It’s a profitable albeit parasitic business, if you can live with yourself.
It's bad enough when you're familiar with Word and it's formatting quirks, and something goes wrong. I just love cleaning up documents after people with zero clue have messed with every element!
It does work, but you also have to check "fix position on page" or "lock anchor," depending on which menu you are in. I've found that people who bitch about Word are mostly basic users who rarely need to do anything like insert images.
This was the hard way, they give you a shot cut that appears next to the picture when you click it. I do agree the default shouldn’t be to slot the picture like a character in a sentence.
Lock anchor doesn't work either, and I've never seen any "fix position on page" option which is what there should be. Unless it was added in the last two years which is the last time I used a subscription version (my personal one is 2016 standalone). That still wouldn't excuse leaving it for 30 yrs.

LibreOffice: No problem.
Word: We have a problem.
In all fairness, Microsoft has only had decades to fix it.
