Wait till the top has a few more roots, at least 3 inches long, then you can safely cut it from the stalk.

This is common in old Phalaenpsis orchids. My suggestions - 1st remove the old leaf bases off the stem. Check the roots in the media. Is the roots turn green when watered. The roots are good. Make a solution from soaking rice in water and use this for several weeks to water roots.

This will pep up the plant. At the same time use a mixture of 4 parts water and 1 part milk to bath the leaves every other day top and bottom. Every few days water and spray with water and vitamin B1. This will increase the plants health. Without the old leaf bases you will see more roots begin

Once the plant has more roots - you can cut off the old base - use cinnamon on the cut. Let dry for a day then pot up in new media. Don’t be hasty! Slow and careful wins the race. Also look up happiness garden on YouTube. Great info there

Keep the moss moist (not wet) and put the plant in bright indirect light. Roots should develop in a few weeks. You can carefully pot the plant once there are enough roots. There are other ways but I might try this method if this orchid is sentimental to you. 2/2

If the roots in the pot are dried out or mushy, they’re likely dead. But you have 2 aerial roots that look good. Cut the stem at the base & wrap it with moistened sphagnum moss & put the whole plant in a plastic bag loosely closed to limit dehydration. 1/2

Mine is and has been doing great for two years. The roots need to have access to air and use an Orchid mix in pot.
