After insisting often that I am a detailed planner one thing I have been leaving out is how often i ignore my plan. Just wrote a whole scene that wasn't in the plan that took my completely by surprise.

The bits that take you by surprise are so often the best bits, because you usually get excited to write them, and excited by all the new possibilities. They just also spoil all your plans and sometimes require extensive rewriting.
A plan is a great thing. However, your characters are not in the slightest bit intimidated by it.
