When I had a proper job they sprang for aircon for the reprographics department (so the machines didn't break down), but in the office all they did was put reflective film on the windows.
When I worked in a massive brary the machine room was the only air conditioned room. And being in the system administrator team we were the only people allowed in!
I can't imagine living without AC. I'm a native Floridian, and while your heat waves are what we call "May through October", we at least have AC in pretty much every building, and the ones that don't are miserable because they're not built like the old Florida homes were.
I do not enjoy it. Mind you if our buildings were different we wouldn't need it so muh - every flat and house in the uk (nearly) is built to keep IN the heat.
I have a proper job. The building was designed for aircon so the windows don’t open but when the aircon broke they didn’t mend it. It’s cooler at home in my north facing room
Traumatically, I had to go to the office for the first time in years and discovered the aircon is controlled by someone in England with a 3 day response time.
If I tell you how long I spent in Smith's "trying to decide" which cold drink drink to have (and then slowly pick up the sparkling water I was getting anyway)

So we ended up being hot in semi-darkness.
