It's wild how integrated whatsapp is in non-US society. We went to Italy, and we were using whatsapp to contact tour guides, restaurants for reservations, hotel owners, everyone! My wife fervently wishes US businesses would follow suit, it's great for introverts who hate making calls.
I've never used it, and it's only been suggested to me by people from outside the US. I've always assumed it was because it was a cheaper alternative to cell phones and texting across borders, especially for people to communicate with others in the US.
As far as I can tell, it looks like they are working on it, but no ETA, and some people have some concerns about the current details of their privacy policy
