The percentage of white men in the US pop is ~30%. Thus, as always, the complaint is that white men are not sufficiently overrepresented (as they have been throughout US history). www.chronicle.com/article/facu...

I also wish someone would call a spade a spade and say that the critiques of faculty hiring are because white supremacists want a segregated higher ed system where white men are the only "meritorious" people. These critiques are as good faith as the "concerns" about plagiarism at Harvard.

People want to play these games of "oh well I like some of what they say," then have discussions via your faculty governance mechanisms about ways to create a faculty hiring system you support. This is just punishment for Harvard because white men don't have as much of an advantage as they once did.

Whew, this. I have two kids in college and they report having women STEM profs, which is FANTASTIC. (I did not have a single female STEM prof in college), but I asked how many Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, etc, profs they’re seeing, and they were like “ohhh. ☹️” We’re not there yet, by a long shot.

When I teach grad students about ed policy and get to the faculty diversity lecture, at least a quarter of the class will tell me I'm their first Black professor

Zero percent surprised. I did a whole four years at college (plus uh *several* more in grad school) and had a single (brilliant!) Black prof (she was one of my thesis advisors!). There were a few Black students and like one Indigenous guy in grad school. It was *extremely* visible.
