overheard in a discussion with other faculty: "since Roe v Wade was overturned, 80% of the faculty Texas A&M has hired have been male."

I imagine that there are lots of confounding factors. My department (at UT) has run searches every year since Roe.

No doubt there are a lot of other factors (e.g., erosion of tenure), but when I talk to people to encourage them to apply to open positions, I hear that it's an important factor.

I can’t quite figure out if it’s impacting our pool. Especially whether the top female candidates aren’t applying (I think there’s some of this, but it’s not just Roe). SB 37 isn’t going to help.

Yea part of the weird reality is that there are a lot of competing forces so it's nigh impossible to get causal estimates. It's actually why looking at a single institution is less helpful, given how things like the TX lege cloud a single institution analysis in TX.

Yes a big part of this is retention in addition to new hires. There's some ways you can get at this with public data but it will rely on the next round of ipeds being released.
