Trudeau & Zelenskyy understand Trump quite well. In different ways, they reject "soft" interpretations of Trump's actions. In Trudeau's case, this means asserting the premise: "Trump is trying to destroy Canada's economy" followed by a reasonable interpretation as to "why" based on Trump's own words

Trudeau: "He talked about banking again today in a tweet, which doesn't make any sense because 16 banks are currently active in Canada holding about $113b worth of assets in this country... what he wants is to see a total collapse of the Canadian economy, because that'll make it easier to annex us."

It is a means of drawing a line between an ingroup and outgroup, and getting implicit buy-in/agreement from the ingroup while being nominally defensible to the outgroup. "Just a joke bro!"
So these "jokes" have purpose and intent behind them
Trump doesn't care whether or not the US succeeds. Putin wants to destroy it; Trump works for Putin.
Billionaires, oligarchs, techbros will feed on the carrion
Also a non-zero chance that the 2020 loss psychologically wounded him on a deeper level than even we Bluesky weirdos anticipated and he's out to punish everyone into poverty.
There is no daylight between the GOP and Trump. None. This needs to be hung on their heads.
Really proud of him
What I wonder is why *American* opponents of Trump have so much more trouble saying these things, or getting the message out, than foreign leaders…
"Trump is a doing bad things and telling lies for corrupt and bad purposes."
(I truly don't know how to deal with this nutcase and glad it's not my call to make)
