I saw a full tour bus (the giant rectangular version) wind its way down a very steep and curvy main “street” of Margarites (small village in Crete) this week and it was a similar kind of revelation. Kinda broke my brain.

I remember taking a bus thru some small village in the Peloponnese years ago where the bus window was within easy grabbing distance of drying clothes on the window-boxes on the buildings next to the road. At one point, the bus got stuck and a bunch of locals picked up a car and moved it.

Otoh I found myself blown away by the eighth of streets when I was in San Diego compared to Philadelphia. It just kept feeling so weird, almost uncomfortable.

i remember when i was in osaka on a food tour, my guide said "you know we japanese love our cars but our streets are so narrow we can't fit them all" and he was surprised when i was like "good, be careful what you wish for"

My street has all the parking in a back alley because the street wasn't originally built for cars. For a while, one of my neighbours had a gigantic Hummer, and they were able to navigate the alley! It was a little less convenient than a car, but certainly possible. Our streets are overbuilt indeed!!
