6 months a year its a paradise. The other 6 its a frozen hell. If they had one year around sunny spot I'd have moved there the first time that ass was elected.
Victoria BC is a paradise, even in the winter. Comparable to Washington DC winters:
December: 4°C to 8°C (39°F to 46°F)
January: 3°C to 7°C (37°F to 45°F)
February: 3°C to 9°C (37°F to 48°F)
A frozen hell for 6 months?
Thomas, do we live in igloos and travel by dogsled too?
I live in Ottawa and we often don’t get snow until mid December. Gone by the end of March. Research your country’s snow and temps then come back to me informed.
I understand! Different school curriculum in the two countries make a big difference! I'm also a history buff and watch shows and documentaries as well. I adore the US and have been fighting for your democracy since the orange asshole came on the scene. Now he's attacking our sovereignty! Fuck him
Exactly right. Our relatively short winters are far from a “frozen hell” Beautiful scenery, Winterlude, world’s longest skating rink, skiing, and all our winter wonders.
Plus I’ve never once feared being shot and killed shopping in a Walmart. We are respected globally. I’m a proud Canadian 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦👍
Yes it does. I’ll take 3 months of some snow than live in a country run by a raving lunatic despot on its way to becoming a Pariah state. Canadian are wiser and stronger.
Seriously, one retired navy officer I knew didn’t have a clue about Canada’s history with Britain until I informed him. Dumbass knew nothing about Canada. I think he believed the war of 1812 was an American victory.🤡So insulated in his own countries so called greatness. 🙄 Ignorance!
Winters here vary a lot. Vancouver/Victoria are usually very mild, Calgary gets chinnocks etc. It's a big country, there's a lot of variability, just like the US
Soon as I figure out how to stop a nuclear bomb from exploding, I hope to immigrate to Canada show them how. It's no pleasure living.behind enemy lines.
And your taxes are 50% instead of 20%, and no where in America pays that low? That's the legal min wage yeah, but companies understand people deserve a living and America doesn't need to enforce a wage, you just gaslit yourself
Canada is a lovely country, but let's not gloss over a vastly over-priced housing market w/ a quarter of the population spending in excess of 30% of income on shelter.
Unions are in decline - mining/manufacturing/forestry.
85 banks versus 4,398 in US - vastly more complex system.
Very true, we ran into issues in the 90 with our leader and they destroyed so much. We haven't been able to get back to building affordable housing in some time. Not that long, but, we have a conservative in Ontario and he is destroying our area and has been for years, I believe any ways.
We have less banks but more regulation. Harper was all set to open us up but 2008 killed his dream (thank god) and we weathered that much better. Housing is an issue for sure but I also blame the majority of that issue on conservatives, Mulroney in 80s killed subsidies. Harper just made it worse.
Strangely enough TD bank paid a massive fine in states for acting like a US bank (laundering, shelters, tax evasion etc) but didn’t do so in Canada (regulations much more tight with oversight).
HSBC US (HSBC no longer operating in Canada), because they were already in trouble with US regulators, tipped off US government Huawei was doing business with Iran, when led to Meng Wanzhou's arrest in Vancouver, and a whole lot of troubles...
Because US dollar is global reserve, even clandestine business between Huawei and Iran had to be done in USD. Maybe that's why Trump is so hellbent on dethroning the USD as global reserve with his actions.
Regional governments (city & provincial) actually hold the real power over housing. Vancouver and Toronto both pretty NIMBY despite economic and job growths.
True enough. In the 70s that was less so. Lot of pushback from people who own multiple properties or who rely on real estate income. BC in particular gave up oversight and let realty essentially police itself. This is the end result.
Cultural shift too. More and more Canadian families now view their primary homes as important part of their nested eggs. Which means they prefer politicians who keep the home prices up.
Most of the Southern banks were issuing their own currency and assigning values based on guesswork. Add in using slaves as collateral, the system failure rate was high.
Banks west of the Mississippi wouldn't work with Southern states due to Slavery.
Paper money also was commonly traded for silver/gold, not a great inflationary marker.
Federal Reserve in 1913 cleaned up many of the issues.
Housing has a pricing issue, just like US, but mortgage construction is a bit different to account for down payments ($1.5M nets 20% down, but under 5%?)
That is crazy
$12k us I would being living comfortably just off the medical premiums
Could the US be set up for the corporations to rob the citizens every way possible
It's an oligarchs paradise.
The people are just something to exploit for profit. Show me one way the people haven't been walked on for a greedy fuck to get filthy rich. Health care? Student loans? Prison for profit? The "justice" system? Prove me wrong!
In the interest of transparency, provincial income tax in Quebec and Ontario are about the same as the federal so we pay twice what is listed here. Still, the rest of these points are true.
Depends on your income level
My tax rate was 22% federal and provincial inclusive
Then using personal tax credits and RRSP contributions was able to lower taxes paid to zip
I am low income, yet living comfortably
Not to mention the reduced stress of:
- Low gun crimes, no fear of being shot
- One school shooting per GENERATION
- No fake healthcare. Not tied to your employer.
- No one cares with bathroom you use
- No confederates "rolling coal"
In Australia minimum wage is $24.10! Universal health care. Both women and men (partners) are eligible for unpaid parental leave, while women are also eligible for paid maternity leave under the Paid Parental Leave scheme. The US citizens are being left behind. Sad
Seems to me that the good citizens have no choice. It's Bad or it's Worse. Too many private corporations can't afford to have good government in place - they'd be missing all that gravy.
Many people in the U.S. have been raised believing it's the best country in the world, a belief sometimes reinforced by their limited international travel.
Many other places in the world, however, offer a higher quality of life.
We spent 10 winters in the US, and the attitude of the border agents was always like…how do we know you won’t stay illegally? We always said….it’s not home…but I don’t think they understood. It was almost like they were programmed or something
I first visited the USA in the early 60s and found it rather backward. Fast forward to '84 when I was interviewed by State Dept. (CIA?) personnel in a US Embassy about 'safe navigation' for POTUS and offered a Green Card. Politely declined.
I don't want them to join us on any items listed in the table. I want the US to join Canada in creating a more fair society for Americans AND EVERY PERSON in our country regardless of status.
Yes
America needs universal healthcare because she cares about her citizens
The people need to make their votes count and stop the influence of the corporate lobbyists being able to rule their government

Outdoors, sports, clean lakes, cities, …
Not fearing our neighbours,

Huge number of banks in the US is a legacy of slavery. Southern states insisted states got to regulate the banks.
Banks west of the Mississippi wouldn't work with Southern states due to Slavery.

The scale and scope are vastly different since Canada has modeled itself off English systems.
Oh, oil prices going crazy. 60%drop in 1986.
Failing AG pricing leading bankruptcies.
Stagflation?
Sure S&L bookkeeping was criminal, but Commercial Banks suffered little to no effect.
Canadian Commercial
Northland Bank
All crashed for same reasons in 1985. Poor regulation and under-collateralized insurance.
Might need to learn how the systems differed and the root causes?
Let's not look at this as a US ONLY issue, it was a wider spread practice.
*A portion of the Canadian loss can be tracked to investing in US Treasuries that left payments severely short for customers.

Problem is the social programs do not fairly spread the wealth
Eg. The American Republican administration is attacking libraries I suspect because they do not know how to utilize libraries to their full potential
It's just the right god-damned thing to do.
America needs universal healthcare because she cares about her citizens
The people need to make their votes count and stop the influence of the corporate lobbyists being able to rule their government
you are correct.
