Europe got addicted to all that Russian oil and gas, too. There was a naive doctrine that west, European leaders especially, applied to Russia when the USSR collapsed: integrate Russians with the free market and the rest will follow.

What followed was economic and political infiltration.

Exactly. The mindset in the west was, "as soon as they get a taste of the good life they will 'come around. They forgot they were dealing with hard line communists whose goal has always been to destroy Democracy.
"Naive", is a good word, add greed and self interest.
