1/2 I'll never forget seeing, in the movie Repentance, women going to where logs were sent from an unspecified prison logging camp. They checked the ends of the logs because prisoners carved their names, to let people know they were still alive.
2/2 It wasn't until a year or so later that I learned that the story was true. The logs were taken from Siberia west, and women gathered everywhere logs were dropped off, to check for names.
It must be truly wrenching for those whose sons and brothers and fathers - and daughters and sisters and mothers - are not returned. I cannot imagine what it must be like to have a dearly loved person imprisoned by Russia. The stress and fear for their safety must be overwhelming.
