I don’t wish to alarm the video game industry but if you make a forever game, many people will, in fact, play that game forever and probably not have time to play anything else.

It's so true. I think what's interesting is that forever games are very seductive to busy people. You can sit down and continue your game, without having to learn new controls or mechanics every time you sit down to play.
You see it everywhere in the game industry. Lots of the people I used to work with all play some MMO, or GAAS game. A lot play FFXIV or WoW. A lot play Destiny.
I feel this more with grand strategy games (like Civ and Europa Universalis) and retro games
I can go back and play the original Legend of Zelda or Super Mario Bros trilogy numerous times and be engaged, but most of the recent ones, once or twice
