We find that the PGI EA (polygenic index for educational attainment) x SES interaction changes sign, depending on the educational outcome considered. We introduce the concept of educational selectivity, i.e., an outcome is highly selective if only a small percentage of individuals attain it 2/6

For low-selective outcomes, the PGI is less predictive on high-SES students, who tend to succeed regardless of genetic propensity—in line with the compensatory advantage model. For high-selective outcomes, success requires both high PGI and SES, aligning with the boosting model (or Scarr-Rowe) 3/6

For those interested in social stratification: we explain and show when to expect the compensatory advantage model to work, i.e., for low selective outcomes, such as completing high school in our study on US.

But for other cohorts and countries it might differ. 4/6

For those interested in sociogenomics: we expand existing theories on GxSES. Scarr-Rowe and trigger models are based on botanic or mechanic metaphors for SES, such as seeds/soil or switcher, with no agency on the side of SES 5/6

Compensatory and boosting models shift the analytical focus to the SES component of the interaction, stressing the active and strategic role of high-SES families in moderating genetic factors. With proper caution in the use of PGIs, sociogenomics & stratification research can enrich one another 6/6
