In general, you get the sense of competing poles with no center. Witkoff pulls in one direction on Gaza and Iran; other voices pull the opposite way. On other issues there's not only a lack of presidential attention but also a shortage of qualified personnel to guide policy.

The administration will tack in a steadily more hawkish direction. But it will also remain distracted and disengaged. That creates a situation in which regional actors (primarily an unrestrained Israel, secondarily Iran and Turkey) will drive events and America reacts to them.

A few months ago it seemed as if Gulf states might try to counterbalance Israel's influence. But Saudi mostly wants to shield itself from the fallout, the UAE is aligned with Israel and Qatar is discredited in much of DC. Arab influence will remain limited.

This is just lazy orientalism. Europe was a killing field for quite literally millennia and was really only pacified and set on a path to unification thanks to the overwhelming power of a largely benevolent external hegemon, the US.

War was a constant in every premodern civilization.

Until at least 100 years ago the peoples occupying the Arabian peninsula were largely tribal. European society might also be fissiparous but it has a rather different legacy. It is an observable fact that Europe has been more united since WW2 and that former communist states have joined that union.
