And if they're charging fines, they should go to remedying the situation that lead to them.
You charge me $100 for being too busy to mow my lawn, you better be hiring someone to do it for me.
Whether I like it or not what someone else does on, in, or with the property they pay for with their own money, as long as it follows the law of the land, is not my business. It certainly doesn’t justify paying a monthly fee for a committee of nosy neighbors to judge and fine people in the community
I’m not saying HOA’s don’t need regulation but have you ever tried to sell a home Nextdoor to someone with 10’ weeds and stacks of newspapers? I once had a neighbor run a dog swimming business out of their backyard. It started at 6 am and ended with a bbq till midnight. Cars lined the street
If it's an illegal operation take it up with the police and your town/city government. Otherwise, again, it may be unsightly but it's not your business what someone else does with the property they pay for, just like what you do with yours isn't their business
HOAs were popularized to enforce de facto segregation during the Civil Rights movement. Any time you hear “it’s to uphold property values and prevent obnoxious neighbors” you should hear “it’s so Black people don’t move in next door.”
Now it’s so banks can control and discriminate.
Abolish HOAs.
That may have been true in the past and still true in some pockets of the country but you’re being obtuse if you insist this absurd generalization is true.
Thats the “MLK solved racism” version of how suburban city planning in the US is segregation in built form.
HOA violations are disproportionately enforced against non-White residents. It’s structural racism in housing.
If you didn’t know before, that’s fine, but don’t insist that HOAs aren’t racist.
Especially when they’re largely unregulated, have little oversight, and can levy absurd fines that can put the residents of that community in financial peril

You know who'd know? The people who run the association of homeowners.
How else do I flaunt my haughtiness and respectability?!
Following absurd rules that gatekeep a lot of people? That's just being a good neighbor to me!
And what if they're... DEI?! I can't call the cops on them!
Sorry, rping is hard, I genuinely don't know how people do it.
