I remember walking into town to sign on in the 80's.. because I didn't have the 32p bus fare. Luckily most of the route was down an abandoned railway line.
My wheelchair using neighbour was sanctioned because the lift at the dole office was broken so he couldn't attend his monthly interrogation.

I left school in 1981.. in Bolton.. Went and signed on.. was told "there are 35,000 time served skilled unemployed workers ahead of you.. go to college and come back when you are 21 maybe?" In those days £16 a week went a long way.. and was 2 weeks in advance... a pint of Trophy Bitter was 23p
