What little belief the average citizen had in the justice system has completely been destroyed! When you lose faith in the rule of law, you lose the democratic republic. It sickens me to say but we're no longer a democracy. All the people who fought and died did so for this shit ? Disgraceful!!
As a student of history, I know that powerful nations, republics, empires, etc. come and go. They usually last for about 200 years & then most often fall from within. Sure, outside influences have contributed to the collapse, but the death throes comes from within. Didnβt think Iβd live to see it!
I'm furious. We struggled for YEARS to prevent this from happening against all odds. Now the violent criminals are taking over.
Zero coup ringleaders prosecuted. Extreme failure. No election investigation after 8+ YEARS of election crimes with Russia. National Security threats. The list goes on.
I just called both my Virginia Senators.
Disgusted, disillusioned, angry at the sheer cowardice and lack of conviction that allowed Donald Trump to
ever come within miles of the Oval Office again.
It fills ME with absolute rage. The fact that this criminal is going to be taking the oath of office on Monday -- as completely as he'll ignore it...how can this be? How? How is every single network not covering this NOW? Well...I guess that's large part of how we got here.
All I wanted was accountability and we got none and now the perpetrator is more emboldened than ever to do even worse. America and our values are self- destructing in high speed thanks to corruption and cowardice.
So no investigation of Congress members or key White House staff? And no mention of this report on Morning Joe? Joyce, you and your colleagues who appear on main stream media might want to use more blunt language about what has happened. This is all deeply disturbing.
Iβm so sickened and saddened at what has transpired and itβs the end of our Country as we know it! Trump is an insane madmen w all of his henchmen! God help us all!
I should say that in the letter to Garland Smith states that it is standing policy to not include co-conspirators. So there could very well be a number of Congressional types on the list, but they did not make it into this report. Again, this list likely won't see the light of day...why?
Those names and evidence need to be sent to The Hague for safekeeping or prosecution. Trump will destroy all of the evidence. Though the American people deserve those names now!
Is it really making a difference? @joycewhitevance.bsky.social and her colleagues have been going on MSM shows and we are still at this point in time. I love her knowledge and her explanation our legal system but I don't have to hear it there. Plenty of other places to follow her.
Yes. It makes all the difference. Whatever it is today, it is delaying what it is going to be. I'm not looking forward to MSNBC's newest legal contributor, Matt Gaetz, CNN flipping to their "woman on the street", Kari Lake, or the new members of fox and friends, Satan, Nosferatu, and Stephen Miller.
Rightly or wrongly, I find myself most furious with Merrick Garland today, more so than I am w Trump and the GOP (and I detest Trump & all he stands for)
Garlandβs ultimate failure in holding Trump to account is to me the single biggest failure in US justice
There IS no longer justice in this land, no matter what anybody says. When Dumpt committed the worst HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, nobody held him accountable, NOBODY! Espionage, giving military secrets to Russians, setting Taliban criminals free, having a private meeting w Putin, siding w RA...
There IS no longer justice in this land, no matter what anybody says anymore. When Dumpt committed the worst HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, nobody held him accountable, NOBODY! Espionage, giving military secrets to Russians, setting the Taliban criminals free etc... & now destroying π’ our democracy
Particularly poignant is the invocation of Ed Levi, a great attorney general whose grandson is now at the center of the Trump-Alito phone call scandal. So much that was fair in our national life is now fouled by Trump and those who worship him.
Merrick the Ostrich encapsulates what we've lost - any sense of urgency in pursuing crimes in high places. What he has brought to the DOJ is reaffirmation of the inequality in administering justice.
High-sounding phrases don't replace a modicum of testosterone which is missing in MIA Garland.
Garland slow-walked this entire process. He is a disgrace to democracy. I hope knowing his legacy will be trashed now haunts him every day of his life. He deserves it.
We The People are one of the institutions that failed to deal with trump so there is plenty of blame to go around when is comes to who is responsible for protecting American democracy
We the people donβt have the ability to criminally indict and prosecute him. That was up to the DOJ. I take NO blame for Trump or his criminality or his reelection.
True, but part of the problem is we think somebody else has to fix things. When they donβt, we say βI take no blameβ
Unfortunately, Americans havenβt really been asked to sacrifice anything individually since the World War II era
Now individual actions might be the *only* response available
Our country knowingly chose the opposite of all the goodness and reasoning he represented. It is heartbreaking. For it to be enabled by SCOTUS, is indefensible.
So now our Dem Govt & DOJ will turn over military, police & courts to an Autocratic Republican Party that cheats to win elections...is that the end of free fair elections in America???
Biden still has a few days left to enact "SCOTUS Immunity Rule" to arrest Trump before EVIL takes over America???
I'm not so sad about what we lost as I am about how hard it will be to claw it all back. I only hope our democracy can weather this a bit longer. #midterms
My thoughts as well! Dems need to get in the fight using the same weapons! We are doomed for sure if our Dem βleadersβ continue to be passive pollyannaβs.
SPEAK UP LOUDER
I think itβs already too late. The dumbest among us have given the worst & wealthiest permission to ravage our country. The idiots who allowed this to happen think theyβll be spared bc of their loyalty. Trump doesnβt like common people. He even told them so. He just wanted their vote & they obeyed.
The United States doesnβt recognize the authority of the ICC, so they may symbolically charge trump, it would be as toothless as all the indictments of him here turned out to be.
The unethical politicians on the Supreme Court have much to do with the loss of our justice system. Who knows how many decades it will take after they and other overtly corrupt judges are removed before it can be restored.
America is waking up to the fact that the famed "Checks and balances" have failed, and that all that kept it working for 250 years was men who had at least some sense of honor. That is gone, the criminals and madmen will run the show for the next two years.
We didnβt LOSE it like a sock in the washer. It was taken by force by a parade of cartoon villains enabled by John Roberts. That weak-willed or compromised justice needs to be set in the sun in a bad way.
And anger. Fury. Rage. That we, as a country, are letting a man lower than the dogshit on a serial killer's shoe back into the WH. And all his equally craven cronies.
β¦ and βyou can only do your job the right way for the right reasonsβ β¦ we canβt lose this integrity to a bunch of grifters with bottomless souls.
Somehow I feel that truth, justice and the good guys will prevail! The report is out and there will be many who will not support the chaos and ramrodding that has started.
Imagine how sad JS must have been on Election Night, knowing he'd worked himself to the bone to save the country, & that it would be all for nought π’
Joyce, do you have any hope, please be honest, that these people will leave power and go away in fair elections four years from now? Iβve seen this play out in other counties I live in over and over, they never leave with another election. Ever! Now that they are in full control.
Yes, when I read it, my eyes became really wateryβ¦I just donβt have enough left for tears. It is profoundly sad. Especially for those of us who spend our lives supporting the rule of law.
One thing that has also eroded the rule of law is letting big corporations and their executives off the hook for massive crimes with no jail and non-prosecution agreements. Sadly, both sides are guilty of that. Democrats at least pay lip service to holding the wealthy and powerful accountable.
Why wonβt President Biden exercise his core constitutional power and have Donald Trump arrested for insurrection and treason? Thereβs enough evidence now that Jack Smithβs final report is out. Weβre not safe under Trumpβs Administration. Heβs a TRAITOR!
Social media's manipulation of public emotions (toward speed, emotional engagement, esp. anger & fear) has led the way toward damaging trust in the rule of law. Law is based on trust, not the other way around. Unrestrained capitalism lead Silicon Valley to monetize engagement and this is the result.
How much longer must we all βlamentβ what has already come to pass? DJT succeeded in destroying faith and commitment to legal precedent, factual documentation, measured research, education, fairness and equality. And he replaced it with grievance and scorn. And we continue to βlament.β
Just a pointer to where people can verify for themselves β
the evidence relied on by the J6 Committee hasn't been illegally destroyed and deleted, as certain people have been claiming.
Thanks to Biden installing MAGA Garland who slow walked every criminal trial on Trump he could.
Biden, Garland & Wray are the 3 Musketeers who protected their King Trump.
Dimwittedly opposed by one without the ability to know where north is, feels no orientation to any north, and is incapable of understanding how to read maps at all.
It stems from the distortion never to prosecute a sitting president, and a monetary deterrent to prevent frivolous delays is no deterrent to the sufficiently rich. We just saw a slow walk of all Trump cases. The rich and powerful have tools not available to those less affluent. Two classes.
The United States of Amnesia is floundering and under attack from unscrupulous robber barons, sellout sycophants, and menial hacks whose mediocrity (and record of crime) is surpassed only by the danger they pose to the safety and well-being of law-abiding Americans.
It may seek to be, but we see how it fails over and over and over, in courtrooms big and small and in state and federal leadership. We the people suffer endlessly as a result.
Back when I taught a class on introduction to legal advocacy I always had a segment on professionalism where we looked at different lawyers who might be role models. Edward Levi was one of them.
Irony of ironiesβ¦the former law clerk that Trump called Justice Alito βto check job referencesβ just before SCOTUS heard the NY sentencing case? β¦was the grandson of Edward Levi.
Money money money. No one wants to admit it in a full throated way because everyone benefits x the voting public. It's the dirty little secret that's very much like the 3rd rail of the subway. It will kill you.
The saddest part for me is the fact that on January 20th Chief Justice John Roberts is prepared to ignore the Constitution and intends to swear an insurrectionist into the highest office in the land.
It is sad, terrible so. I fear that because of the supermajority of Republicans on the Supreme Court, and the stacking of the judiciary over the next four years (possibly another Supreme Court seat), that we've lost this permanently. :(
Frankly, it's an insult. They had 4 LONG YEARS...and the result was a big, fat, nothing. The justice system is broken beyond repair in the US - total immunity for the rich and connected.
It exposes the truth that you are not the land of the free nor the land of the brave because both asseverations demand moral compass and honesty. This society identifies as a sociopath one because one was elected and his crimes and bad management mean little
Biden needs to have all the evidence for these cases and everything to do with them sent to The Hague for safe-keeping for the American people or for prosecution.
Very sad we do not have a fair & working justice system. We must dissolve the U.S. Our Constitution has failed us. We need a new one based on equality for all, easy/transparent voting, only citizens can give up to $3k for elections/yr, universal healthcare, corporations are not people, tax the rich
Not only have we lost the rule of law, we have lost respect for our Supreme Court who were the pallbearers.
We can also mourn the loss of civility, respect, and a love for our fellow citizens.
Well, all 3 branches of the government and the media helped this loss along. What is sad is that the prosecutors and, indeed, the country have been betrayed at every turn. We have a party of fascists and a party of cowards.
Yeah, like we didn't already know all this. Respectfully, Mr. Smith, your job was to prosecute this unprecedented criminal, not release a report on his "criminal effort." You failed abysmally!
Please explain what you would have done differently in Smith's position, with exactly the same timetable that he was given and the same hurdles (the SCOTUS immunity decision). And then please explain what you would have done differently when the subject of your investigation was elected President.
Eg. Filed the slam-dunk documents case in DC, where a conviction would likely have come within 6 months. Push for expedited appeals at every turn. Borrowed from Kenneth Starrβs playbook by strategically leaking to keep the public engaged, pressuring judges and SCOTUS to act expeditiously.
Iβll give you the DC issue (although filing it in Florida seemed reasonable at the time), but he did push for expedited appeals and got nowhere. And Iβm not at all convinced that a strategic leaking strategy would have got anywhere other than providing Trump with more excuses for delaying tactics.
But surely you remember him explicitly asking SCOTUS to speed up the immunity decision, as he knew full well how big an impact it might have on the case? But when they decided to go slow, there was nothing he could viably have done to speed things up.
I take your points. But I suspect Smith himself rues and regrets the impression that a suspected criminal like Trump could take on the whole DOJ and win. If he had it to do again, I suspect he would do a few things differently...
This is the hard part of trying to teach our grandchildren that being good people matters. What theyβve seen in their short lives so far is good people being trampled over.
I try to explain why Iβve been vegan for 40 years- even though itβs socially hard & often felt intractable: because at the end of the day all I have is what I believe in. If I trade that in for whatβs easy or gains me acceptance or power, who will I face when I rest my head down each night?
That Proves that the MAGA SC Justices, MAGA House and Senate, Maga Judicial Branches, Maga LEAβs Maga Governor, Maga Local Officials are all Corrupt and Disregard the Rule of Law. Trump is a Convicted Criminal. Theyβve released Lawlessness, with Convicted J6ers. Eye for an Eye.
Iβm not sad. Iβm angry, Merrick Garland failed this country and the Constitution. This should have been litigated. There is no excuse except fear of appearing political which in the end backfired. This countyβs legal system not only looks weak to the world, it is weak and useless.
It's a sad and terrible day. The American system of justice was on trial, as it failed to hold Trump accountable for his many crimes. Not only that, it seems voters did not care. Trump is the first convicted felon to ever hold the office of the presidency in American history. That's a tragedy.
Not so much forgetting a word, but that party discipline would prevent impeachment/removal/disqualification particularly for J6, the clearest hypothetical there could ever be.
It makes me angry that the system is so rigged for the white wealthy men and no one including the democrats want to change it.I donβt want to hear no one is above the law and equal justice for all bs.

"If the American people had actually shown up to vote to prevent Trump for getting into office, we wouldn't be dealing with this right now."
Too often, shortsightedness, and impatience is what gets this country in real trouble. Yet, that's discussion no one's ready to have.
Biden still has a few days left to enact "SCOTUS Immunity Rule" to arrest Trump before EVIL takes over America???
And it had better not be in the form of a book he hopes to hawk on TV...
If we want to be heard, we need to use the same loud, ugly language Republicans use bc itβs the only language they understand.
SPEAK UP LOUDER
I urge you to read up on Germany 1933, after the Nazis won the Nov 1932 general election:
March 1933 a snap election was held where the opposition was hamstrung and many newspapers already banned.
The November 1933 general election ballot only listed on party.
The rest is history.
For the country, the planet, and also watch so many of our species become it's worst self.
Been saying this all along.
Weβre done. The rest is a βshowβ.
Garland was/is weak AF. Pathetic from day one.

It's available online.

Itβs not looking good for the good guys.
Bad times ahead.
Then the MSM got greedy and played with fire.
So, I donβt feel sadness. I feel duped.
Biden not seeing any progress should have canned AG and FBI dir in 12/21
SKorea: 3 wks to impeach remove indict
USA: 78 wks to start
4yrs later nothing and now elected again!
Biden is POTUS. The failure of all of this is on him.
Congress could have prevented this by invoking 14-3 & not certifying an ineligible adjudicated insurrectionist.
MSM did nothing. Most citizens aren't even aware.
We can also mourn the loss of civility, respect, and a love for our fellow citizens.
