And I guess the solution up until now is just use massive bitrates for those fancy screens cause rich people have good internet and/or bluray players but that doesn't work anymore now that OLED is mainstream and Netflix is still cronchy

I used to have an OLED - you need full non-re-encoded blu-ray bitrate to get a decent looking image. All the compression standards since h264 have been incremental anyway. h265 hides artifacts a bit better, while crushing grain, the others are only good for web video.
