As ICE steps up immigration enforcement, it is more urgent for all of us – immigrants and citizens alike - to understand our rights. CASA's 'Know Your Rights' document (updated in Jan 2025) is a great resource. Here are some key takeaways.

It feels so dark right now that even knowing your rights doesn’t take away the cynicism of thinking they wouldn’t respect your rights even if you asserted them.
Police or ICE agents may stop you in a public place and ask you questions, but you do not have to answer (except some minimal info as required by law). Ask to speak to a lawyer.
If ICE or police come to your home, only a warrant signed by a judge gives them permission to enter your home. An administrative immigration warrant does not. (Be sure to know which is which.)
If you are arrested, be sure to know whether it was ICE or local police who arrested you. CASA says you should ask to see a lawyer, assert your right to remain silent, and ask for a bond.
CASA encourages preparation before any possible run-ins with ICE or police. Talk to your family and friends, know where your documents are in advance, and seek legal advice.
I've witnessed ice busting into homes unprovoked without warrant and even running people over who are recording them. Not to mention tribal members getting detained too.
