I do not think society takes the effects of technology - inside and outside of social media - very seriously at all, despite the fact that it's pervasive in almost everything we do

It would gain more traction if it was named the department of "This is how tech is fucking with society"
It is leading to kids who have infinite information at their fingertips and have no emotional experience with empathy, suffering, or striving to manage it.
I recall hearing some Tony Robbins tape (yeah, I've moved on from that, but anyway) where he talked about the power of gaining rapport and trust with people on the deepest level of values. But he warned: use it to hurt people, and they will never trust or forgive you.
