Like, why is this impossible? I am not asking for something that seats 8 and hauls stuff, or goes 1000 clicks on a single charge. And I get that the batteries are more expensive than in a hybrid.
But still. Gimme a toaster on wheels that steers and I'm good.
BYD has already got a plant in Ontario where they were assembling (a small number of) EV buses and misc other stuff, sure they could set up a car plant here too. But they could absolutely undercut legacy manufacturers on costs. But why undercut by 1/2 when you can max profits at 10% low?
BYD has some reasonable commuter cars under $20,000 USD, unfortunately there is now a 100% tariff on Chinese cars. Some models could still hit the $30,000 CAD mark.
As of Nov 2024 they stopped considering Canada - hopefully they reconsider after Tesla has become pariah.
