Despite overwhelming evidence that government forces indiscriminately shot and killed hundreds of unarmed civilians in #Andijan, authorities put the death toll at 187. The #Uzbekistan government denied any responsibility for the killings.

#Uzbekistan authorities detained and tortured or ill-treated hundreds of participants in and witnesses to the #Andijan massacre and for many years put intense pressure on people who had participated in the protest, families of refugees who fled, & refugees who returned.

The #Uzbekistan government rebuffed all calls for an independent, international inquiry, and instead sought to rewrite history and silence all within the country who might question its version of what happened in #Andijan.

Uzbekistan’s partners called for an independent investigation into the killings. They called for accountability. Uzbekistan even faced sanctions.

But, gradually those sanctions were lifted. And at some point, calls for accountability largely stopped.

Uzbekistan never did commission an independent investigation - no one has ever been held accountable for the deaths of unarmed protesters in #Andijan in 2005.

Addressing the lack of accountability for past abuses isn't high on this administration's agenda either.

As we remember – 20 years on – the deaths of hundreds of unarmed protesters who had gathered in #Andijan that day, it is as crucial now as it was 20 years ago not to allow the Andijan Massacre to become a closed chapter in #Uzbekistan's history and to continue calling for justice and accountability.
