We are 8 days from the end of quarter 2 & kids have started to ask.
“What can I do get get my grade up?”
My response…
“Your work, as it was assigned in class.”
“Can I turn it in now?”
“No, that’s why we have rolling due dates.”
“Is there extra credit?”
“Extra implied you did the credit…”

I'm a therapist working with teens, I coach them how and when to ask for help, extensions, etc. I often hear they can't focus in class, so plan to do it at home, then fail to do that too. Thoughts?
"Get a time machine," said the professor. "But first, you have to lend it to me so I can kill baby Hitler."
"Seriously?" asked the student.
"Absolutely. It's first order of business for anyone with a time machine."
"oh, I can't have a B, I need an A"
"ok, well do your work"
::error noises::
"Well, you have an A- because the quality of your work dropped off dramatically this semester, so no. I do grade bumps if a student is within 1% of the next higher grade, and you're not."
Got called out PUBLICLY in that kid's graduation address.
Also, if you have a FAQ then that's pretty cool. None of my grade school teachers thought of doing so, by my recollection.
You're legitimately struggling at the start? He'll help you above and beyond.
You wait a few months?
"Too bad. Waluigi time."
1. Teens will wait till the last minute. If I let them, they would turn in 10 weeks of work x 120 students and leave me with 72 hours to grade it before my deadline, that if missed, could get me fired. It should be noted that the 72 hours are a weekend.
4. If you have never worked with teens, you don’t know what you are talking about.
✌️
My 1st test in college I studied for 15 hours over 2 days - I made an A-
It got longer & longer as each test came.
He'll change his habits or he'll be back at home soon!
Assignment one is assigned on Monday and due the following Monday. If it’s not turned in by them, a zero is recorded.
Kids have an additional number of days to do the missing work and the zero goes away with no penalty right up until it’s “close date”
The agenda is also posted on their Google classroom.
After the close date that’s it. Unless a kid has extenuating circumstances.
Sincerely,
A Former Professor Who Couldn't Take It Anymore (though students were roughly 10% of the reason I burned out)
Mad respect to you and hat-tip from one professional to another.
But you still might
😂
So how about they pay me more.
Now excuse me. I need to take my mandatory 30 minute work poop.
“you mean I can’t change my grade any longer?”
“Correct.”
“But I could retake…”
(Slowly closing office door).
It gets better once you get out of the business. Good luck on your next 20 weeks!
As a teacher's kid & mom of 3, having experience with IEPs & accommodations, I have my stories & know you're speaking truth.
You have my admiration for being consistent, realistic, & fair.
That's everything!! Thanks for your dedication!!
I teach at a local college. I taught 2 sessions of the same course this semester. As it is a medical class, there are both in class assignments, and lab days.

At the end of the one lab day, I asked them if their family member was sick or injured, would they want the medical staff who did the>
I've said, you want an A. I want you to learn. Those 2 aren't always the same.
not a teacher but as a uni grad and good test taker, all classes should have assignments or be graded on more then just tests. otherwise you're just grading test taking ability
Do it well, on time, once. I’ll tutor, if you need me. Not kidding. Kids will rise.

The APs were upset because she called them "they"
Another school, you couldn’t give less than a 50. The computer system would change it if you tried. 4 marking periods x 60 (passing) is 240. We were giving them 200.
If you miss a deadline for turning in your rubric for the coming semester, it still needs to be done and turned in. Give your students the same grace.
All these have real world consequences. I’m sorry you were too coddled.
&FWIW, high grades are not always a direct correlation of effective teaching.
“You are not going to like this grad but we can make sure your next one is better.”
“How?”
What you got was a snapshot. Not a movie .
