the specific issue here was that she was doing work in exchange for accommodation, which is one of those just-grey-enough areas that most people don't have a problem when crossing the border (especially if they don't mention it!) but Workaway has a whole bunch of visa warnings for US stays.

And an American was refused entry to the UK for something similar. Back in 2019.
