Having read those early drafts ("The Legend of the Starkiller -- from the Journal of the Whills -- Episode IV: The Star Wars") was a very good emotional prophylaxis in advance of the release of the prequels, and is exactly why I was able to enjoy the first one. By Attack of the Clones, not only did nobody want to tell Lucas "no", but he felt he needed to "play to the fans" who were asking for big army action, lotsa lightsabers all day, and less of that drippy "sentimentality" which, for all its faults, at least felt like authorial intention in Episode I.
