I don’t think we’ve reached a point where there aren’t any potatoes in Russia because they are importing them from EVERYWHERE they can get them.

And just so you know, a lot of these import agreements aren’t new. They’ve been importing potatoes from Egypt for a long time.

Yes, Russia has been importing potatoes from Egypt and Pakistan for years.

This used to be to provide variety --- some potatoes just don't grow in Russia.

Now it is to make up for failed harvests.

The problem is that importing is expensive, and I wrote a big thread about the choices Russia has to make, and one of the issues was keeping the ruble strong so the food prices didn’t climb any more.

Labelling it as "chicken" is a pretty good indication of illegal imports, but in principle, salmon can be found in Belorussian rivers, particularly in the Viliya system.
