Yes, Tesla paid it back early. Which is sometimes used by Tesla fanboys as proof that he didn't really need the government's help, when in fact it shows just the opposite: The loan was a smart investment by the government, and demonstrated the value of the Department of Energy loan program.

For reference: Musk owns a little over 400 million Tesla shares. On its first day of trading in 2010, the stock was at $23, which would make the stake he has today worth less than $10 billion. Instead, his shares are worth about $150 billion.
