I think this is essentially true. On the other hand, I don't see how de-Confederalization would ever have fit into American political culture. Germany was under US occupation. After the Civil War, the North occupied the South and attempted to de-Confederalize in lots of ways, but it was abandoned.

Absolutely correct. If the treasonous bastards who took up arms against the constitution of the United States had been arrested, tried and convicted and jailed and if every rebel officer above the rank of colonel had been court martialed and hanged, post war history could have been much different.

“The Lost Cause” story of the Confederacy is still taught in public schools across the south today. And Trump’s attempts to return the country to a mythical ideal is fueling more revisionist history. Until our history books and curriculum is uniform and accurate, we will never overcome the myths.

For 50 years after the Civil War, Confederate graves went unmarked & its history was untaught in the south. There was no national history curriculum. Just simmering resentment & folk tales. That’s why Confederate monuments date from the 1920s, and the hatred and anger moved into the 20th century.
