Ichiran Ramen is a fun chain style place to take kids. Everyone sits in separate booths and your food is served through a small hatch in front of you. There’s one in Shinjuku city.

Takeshita street in Harajuku is full of sweets, toys, and youth fashion but it might be a little overwhelming for young kids.

Every major city's central railway station has a "Ramen Street" which is always relaxed!

Unfortunately most of my recs won't be too interesting for kids :(

Like Italy it's hard to find bad food and it's often cheap. Restaurants with window displays of replica models of the food dishes served inside are fine when this would be a red flag to avoid the place in Europe. You often pay on way out at desk, rather than ask for the bill

Do make sure, after your Shinjuku dinner that you head into Kabuki-Cho and take a wander around #GoldenGai.

Also! This is very important. #GoogleMaps Will be absolutely invaluable to you. Do look up when finding your destination. Restaurants and bars found above ground level sometimes.

My dude! Go to #Robatasho in Shinjuku. One of the greatest meals I’ve ever had. Ask to be seated by the fire pit. To book in advance. They speak OK English, or you can email them.

Loved the ramen at fuunji. Also try wandering into Donki (Don Quijote) you'll either love it or hate it, but I find it a fun place to get souvenirs.

I've never been quite sure why but I find the experience of Donki in Japan even more strange than in Bangkok. The one in Patpong was ok,but the one in MBK was nowhere near confusing enough.

It's the only conveyor sushi (kaiten-zushi) that we went to in our 3 week 2022 trip, I'd researched in advance for Japanese reviews, Shinjuku will have equivalents I'm sure.

My wife is vegetarian, the translared touchscreen ordering was useful, and sushi is usually clear cut. Your Vegi contingent may have to get used to picking out bonito flakes if you go high-end. Enjoy!

Also, with warm weather finally with us, a picnic in nearby beautiful Shinjuku Gyoen (¥500 entry fee) seems feasible. Again, foodhalls or, as others have mentioned, konbini are a good source of prepacked food. Plastic sheets to sit on are on sale inside the park.

A little late to recommend watching (or re-watching) "Lost in Translation" but that is one of the best tasters IMHO. Food in Japan is generally excellent and often the cheapest food options are among the best, especially where kids are concerned, although vegetarians are not so well catered for.

Takashimaya Department store- top floors. Its at the South entrance of Shinjuku Station which is the easiest to deal with. Nakamuraya Restaurant has curries and Japanese versions of hamburgers - good for kids even 70 year olds. U can't book, be prepared to sit outside in a queue, they move quickly.

Google Maps is great for working out travel, but watch out for trying to find a particular recommendation if it's on a high floor (which many great places are in Tokyo shopping districts).

I believe you should get lost in a Tokyo station on your first trip. I remember getting lost in Ikebukuro station fondly. It was also my first ever jetlag, quite the surreal day 😁.

I think the situation is improving beyond what it once was, vis-a-vis finding vegetarian food, but there is an app my vegan friends here in the UK told me about called Happy Cow which *might* help.

Veggie isn’t easy there, but you can usually google one now (beware dishes advertised as veggie but not).
