Since the term AI has been poisoned by generative world-burning stuff, we're going to have to go back to calling video game AI routines "the computer." I couldn't beat the final boss because the computer was being cheap, etc.

I've always referred to bots & non-player characters in video games as "CPUs" since it made the most amount of sense to me. Calling these types of bot characters "A.I." not only felt off to me (given they don't function like the gen A.I. we have currently), this still ain't "Artificial Intelligence"
The thing that cracks me up about the meme of Mom calling every game system a Nintendo is that I grew up playing video games with my mom... And she STILL did that (even though my first console was a Sega Genesis) 😂
Yeah, internally I've even switched from tracking bugs in the tactical and strategic sections of the game to be AO (Artificial Opponent) - a phrase I've always liked since there are so many times it's more important to cheat (either for or against the player) to keep the game more enjoyable.
I was already doing that for stand-ins for real players in multiplayer games (e.g. the CPU/COM players in Mario Kart or Mario Party) but yeah, gonna have to start doing that for enemies and NPCs as well
Quite literally the other day, we discussed changing "AI Match" to "CPU Match" in our game entirely because we're just so sick of the term and don't want anyone to confuse us for horrible people.
Reminds me of when RE4 came out and uneducated fanboys claimed the AI was way more advanced cos the Gonados knew how to use tools and could farm unlike zombies lol (obviously mechanically a character having a pitchfork to stab you with is no different to claws but that escaped them)
Some of us never stopped. Has been very confusing for my son, who thinks "the computer" is the 14 year old dust bin that screeches to life once every 3 months when I want to watch The Maxx
What about "The Director" that's what the AI in Left 4 Dead is called and it's pretty fitting because you can also say "The director really screwed me over in that fight"
Big fan of falling further into escapism, myself. The farm that lives inside my screen needs me to water the crops every day and get birthday gifts for everybody in town except the Jojamart representative.
We used to call it "the machine" in Brazil back when playing arcades or rental stores. Like "the machine is cheating" or "are you playing against someone or against the machine?"
I still use “CPU” on the regular. Like how I never stopped wearing Converse All-Stars when they went out of fashion for a chunk of the '90s, so I had a great collection when they came back in vogue… stand still long enough and eventually the world circles back around to you
me? just how “computer generated image” hits different after midjourney and dall-e and AI generated images being around now
it used to mean “a person used a computer to make this” and we really never should have conceded ground to saying the image was generated by the computer
oh, yeah I get that part. I just mean what were you referring to as CGI that got misconstrued? Was it a prerendered cutscene? Or just the concept in general?
Suggestions
- The CPU
- The NPC
- The Algorithm
- The Calculations
- The Programming
- The Behaviour
The CPU was acting unusually
The NPC bugged out
The boss was unbeatable; its algorithm was too complex
The calculations were way off
The programming wasn’t very consistent
The behaviour was dumb
I've been substituting "duplicative image generation" as far as that corner is concerned. One hopes it catches on as a more descriptive term. The offensive thing is that the creation of an image is infinitely more considered by the motions of an artist than it ever is through those programs.
We could also call the CPU “lower case ai” and then if someone insists talking about the other “AI”, we put the onus on them to clarify they aren’t referring to the early 2000s Spielberg/Haley Joel Osment movie?

So yeah. I'm saying I was cool before the rest of y'all.😎
But I do agree that The Computer is a good one
“not that kind!”

It was a mistake that's always had that same feel, which is why I think that GenAI has the same view to the Clay of the Land.
