This bill would:
- Slash federal funding for food assistance, making low-income people bear the cost when states can't fill the hole.
- Take food assistance away from millions of people entirely & reduce it for millions more.
- Cripple SNAP's ability to respond to recessions.
Here's how: This bill would require states to pay at least 5% of SNAP food benefits starting in 2028, with some owing up to 25%. States have been sounding the alarm that they can’t absorb this federal funding cut & it would lead to benefit cuts, eligibility restrictions, or both.
The language is unclear, but it appears this extreme & unprecedented cost-shift could end SNAP entirely in some parts of the country if states decide the new state funding requirements are impossible for them to meet and they opt out of the program.
Even in good times, states will struggle to fill the massive hole left by this federal funding cut. But when the economy weakens, state revenues fall—at the same time more people lose jobs & need help putting food on the table.
The bill would also take SNAP away from parents & grandparents of school-aged kids, adults in their early sixties & people living in areas without enough jobs by dramatically worsening SNAP's harsh, ineffective, & red tape-laden work requirement.
So what will actually be done with our tax money if programs like SS, Medicaid, SNAP, etc. go away? It’s rhetorical, but please ask yourselves this if you haven’t yet thought about this.
Tax breaks for the rich, into the orange menace's pockets and to finance his golf trips, into Musk's pockets ... Blue states need to keep their funds and use it for their own citizens. We need to stop subsidizing red states as well. Why should we send tax $ if we aren't getting anything for it?
Whether they did or didn’t, taking food from needy people, and children up to 17yo (they can’t vote), does not solve the voting participation issue. It’s soulless.
Does a dictatorship and the destruction of our democracy solve the voting participation issue?
It sure will if we are unable to vote ever again.
Those people who did not show up to vote have doomed our country.
Republicans are actively trying to take away voting rights across the country. So yeah.
I agree with you. Your comment was asked during the discussion about cutting SNAP benefits. If we want people to participate, blaming them is a poor start. I understand your anger. I really. We will get no where if we continue a blame game.
So how do we get people registered to vote and actually get them to show up?
Perhaps when people lose what Democratic lawmakers worked so hard to get for poor people, like SNAP, then they will show up to vote in every election.
It's a good question that has been asked for decades. I don't know the answer. This sounds callous, but part of me wonders if the final arbiter of voting is the loss of so much. It's a view from 30,000 feet. . The danger on the ground is that the loss of voting kills all possiblity. We are in danger
What most people don't realize is That disabled, older people like me are already only getting enough in SNAP benefits to eat one decent meal a day. How well would you eat on $147 per mo. In NY state?
Now imagine drastic cuts?
It's literally a starvation scheme.
