Re: Lack of popularity of these films. I saw the double feature in the theater but wasn’t blown away by either film. I think these were the worst that both directors had done at that time. Interestingly, I think Tarantino got a lot better and Rodriguez got a lot worse after this.

@kelnivale.bsky.social , I loved hearing your enthusiasm for Death Proof! I didn’t like it as much because I found Kim to be so grating! I love Tarantino’s dialogue (especially from Samuel L Jackson) but I felt Tracie Thoms’ Jackson-esque line delivery just didn’t seem authentic to me.

I don’t like Planet Terror, but I loved your discussion on Rose’s experience in Hollywood. It’s sad that some filmmakers closely linked to HW did nothing to stop him or may have emulated the behavior themselves. Loved the shoutout to “The Love Witch”! I watched that a few days ago on Tubi.

Young Tarantino likely saw Convoy & Bullitt, & viewed them as 'cool'. Old T may have opted to include them as a 'nod' to his youth but also realized those movies are 'cool' for the car work, not the characters.

Mickey Rourke was T's first choice to play Stuntman Mike.The deal fell through with the agent but that choice would've made the movie even better (IMO) Kurt was good but Mickey would've been more "toxic"

The little convoy duck sits on top of the hood as the crash sequence begins and races toward the other car's round headlights. Shot from this angle (from inside Mike's car) and from the side it's phallic. T makes this even more explicit by including a round "hole" hanging from the intended target🧵

If I am not mistaken, it revitalized Kurt Russells character for a bit. Just like Quentin Tarantino did with John Travolta in Pulp Fiction. A few years later, Kurt did The Hateful Eight.

Yes I did but of the two death proof was my favorite. I have both on DVD. The gritty levels of the injuries in both movies makes my skin tingle.
