Completely agree with your piece, science needs to be useful beyond academic papers. And climate modelling will have a central role on facing climate change challenge.

Thank you, linked cmip workshop slides & recordings are clarifying. Is continuous delivery a possible approach? Models don't have to run on exact same subversions. Yearly results would only aggregate most recent runs. Allows slow models/limited budgets more infrequent runs.

Hi Gavin here another study that MHWs suppress ocean heat uptake and act as a heat depot to the atmosphere when stronger winds terminate them - their contribution to the recent temperature jump should be analyzed. - only model result but still another one...

I was informed that they were using the CMIP5 projections (which was a repeated cycle) from 2008 onwards. Doesn’t quite square with your plot, but the current discrepancy is clear.

It's closer to repeated than what actually happened, but I agree it's not exactly repeated (assuming I've done everything correctly...)

I think CovidMIP should receive an honourable mention as an example of an attempt to simulate a recent real-world event. The protocol was a bit more complicated than extending historical exps and the results were mostly null, but it was still quite useful as a dry run of operationalisation.

It was a great opinion piece & useful follow up. How possible is any of this if all USG funding is cut and/or USG data is no longer reliable?
