I try to avoid falling into the trap of commenting based on media headlines but, having read the Govt release, this does feel a bit cart before the horse. Surely improve wages, training, and prospects to encourage recruitment of home grown talent before turning off the overseas recruitment tap?

Yep - I saw that but ‘turning off the tap’ before this is sorted will lead to more staffing shortages. Might be better to tighten up the regulations/deal with rogue recruiters but don’t stop international recruitment. This feels like a knee jerk reaction to the council elections.

They can talk all they want about improving working conditions and pay. But is it going to happen? No it’s not. There’ll just be giant gaps in care home employment, possibly leading to deaths and scandal. It’s a terrible policy.

It feels as if it will, mainly because Brits won't take those low paid seasonal jobs or posts with poor working conditions. Trying to 'encourage' them to do so seems like a dead end to me.
Time will tell, but if we are employing migrants on a need basis it could work 🤷

Hopefully the measures to properly 'professionalise' care work will see training standards and therefore pay increase.

Fewer care sector managers who don't themselves do any care work might also help...can you imagine a headteacher not doing any teachers (oh yes, they now run academy chains...)

It's hard after 14 years of the Tories, but you have to trust the government. They have the data, the information (most of which is published somewhere) and will have done the projections on outcomes.

The Home Sec is one of the brightest people in government. This plan will be well thought through.

Exactly what’s needed. The next 30 years is going to need a lot of caring. Professionalise care work with decent career paths, working conditions and salaries. We can still have immigration into care work but without the exploitation.

We have apparently a pool of 40k already here without a job - partly due to 10k arriving to find they had been exploited & no job existed. The rest are down to other reasons, such as their sponsor losing their license to sponsor due to dodgy practices.

So we need to recruit them first.

Yes, issues are always far more nuanced than may first appear. The challenge for the Govt. apart from the issue itself is to find a convincing narrative to explain the nuances. Easy for Reform et al to sloganise, harder for Govt. to communicate detailed policy.

Yes, I have to confess I'm disappointed that Labour's messaging has not been as effective as it needs to be. They seem unable to get off the back foot. I worry that delivery will not be enough. Unless people can feel better, any improvement to their lives may not be acknowledged as success.

Yes, 40k are displaced. Of the 130k vacancies, how many are 37.5hrs needed for sponsorship and how many of the employers have a licence to sponsor. This reduces the number of accessible vacancies.
New visa rules have £12.82 min wage. The nat min wage is £12.21. Employers who can sponsor, may not.
