This angle is silly. We don’t need the Manchurian Candidate to hypothesise a strategy to the behaviour of the Trump admin. There are 2.5 peer competitors in the world. Sanctions pushed Russia towards China, and 1.5 is greater than 1. 1/

US wants to peel Russia away and form an axis to secure US dominance over China in the new global order. Russia doesn’t trust US, because history, so US doing everything they ask to show commitment, no NATO, no intelligence, etc. 2/

They’re also concerned about the next 30yrs. Russia and Europe together make 1 whole peer, whereas China added would control all of Eurasia and dwarf US. This is why Europe is being treated badly. It’s important that these relationships don’t repair. 3/3

Oh, and Europe on its own is irrelevant. It has a sophisticated economy and a huge population, but it has no military, no strategic natural resources, and no influence over countries with those resources. Canada is a problem, because they will gravitate towards Europe, but that situation is evolving

There is no doubt. Trump likes strongmen. It makes no sense for Trump to be bowing to Putin, who has been shown up as very weak in the war w Ukraine. So why does he pander? Putin has something on him.

If he is an asset, it's more likely because they've bought him: made offers of future deals.

Trump has always been drawn to dictators because he likes the model. With Putin, he also respects him because he's richer, stronger and more powerful than Trump.
